Step 4: Automation

On-Call Optimizer keeps your schedules up to date, flexible and fair in the background. Once it’s set up, you and the other members don’t have to tend it often.

Lifecycle automation

In the previous step the first assignment ran and was confirmed. From now on, On-Call Optimizer keeps the schedule running on its own:

• Scheduled assignments run whenever the schedule’s assigned shifts fall below the horizon, and are confirmed automatically. Members are notified of their new shifts. See the schedule lifecycle.
• Destinations are synchronized with your on-call product, so updated shifts from swaps and new assignments reach it promptly.

Enable automatic destination export

Each destination has a synchronization mode, shown in the Mode column of the schedule’s Integrations tab:

• Authoritative and Bidirectional export confirmed shifts automatically. A destination copied from your on-call product starts in Authoritative mode.
• Manual export only exports when you click Synchronize.

To change the mode, click the pencil (Edit destination) next to the destination on the Integrations tab. See synchronization modes.

Automatic confirmation of scheduled assignments

Scheduled assignments are confirmed automatically, so there is nothing to turn on. If one can’t be confirmed, for example because it failed, its draft waits at the top of the Timeline tab with a red badge, and no further scheduled assignments run until a schedule admin regenerates or abandons it. See drafts that can’t be confirmed.
